On the 13th of May took place the Bread Festival in Targovishte, at which members of the Pensioners clubs from the region took place and presented loaves and sourdough bread made after old recipes. The Festival was organised by the Club of NGOs and the Pensioners’ clubs. It was held within the initiative involving 12 countries from the Danube region “Tastes of Danube”.
The venue was in front of the Fair building, where the traditional Targovishte Fair was being held. Guests from Romania and Ukraine, who have come especially for the Day of Targovishte, took part in the Festival. Mrs. Hristalina Halacheva was the official representatives of the local government.
A prayer for our daily bread was conducted by the Vicar and clergyman Slavcho Prodanov. „Our people adore bread. Noone is bigger than bread”, said father Slavcho and gave benediction to the labour of the people working in this trade. The citizens of Targovishte and the guests had the opportunity to view the exhibition of over 45 ritual loaves of bread, prepared with yeast and sourdough and also to taste them.
The viewing was followed by a short folklore programme performed by the singers of the folklore group “Shareno gerdanche” (Colourful necklace). The ethnographer from the Targovishte museum, Diyana Zhekova, talked about the role of bread in the life of the Bulgarians. Official delegations from Ukraine and Romania tasted the ritual loaves and sourdough bread.
