We are a national not for profit educational network of 51 U3As meant for bettering older people’s life by enabling them to have constant access to education and culture. The U3As are run by professionals specialized in andragogy and adult education and to some extent by older people themselves.
We deal with education for older adults and education about older adults. We are also concerned with raising public awareness about older people’s issues. Our programme is for people over fifty who want to explore new educational areas and develop their abilities, for personal, professional and societal reasons.
We measure the impact of our educational programmes and our work by economic criteria (more wealth, more work), by social participation criteria (more participation in decision making processes) and personal growth criteria (more knowledge, more skills, more self confidence, more giving).
Our role in relation to Slovenian and European adult education
Slovenian Third Age University was founded in 1984 upon an initiative of experts in adult education and university teachers of andragogy and with the collaboration of its first students. Over years it has grown into a network spread all over the country with more than 21 000 students, 2000 mentors of all generations and 2000 volunteers.
Slovenian Third Age University was a major break through in Slovenian adult education stimulating the emergence of many nation wide set innovative educational initiatives, i.e. study circles network, community education, education for active citizenship, all of them having both educational and action oriented targets- for the benefit of older people and of local community. Its education is mostly based on co-operative, transformational, reciprocal and mutual learning.
Slovenian Third Age University is a member of ESREA, and EMIL European Map of Intergenerational Learning, FORAGE , an emerging network of researchers in the field of older people’s education. It is also a founding member of the Danube Civil Society Forum.
